The Lansing Company / Slik Toy
Founder: Leo Huschmidt
Location: Lansing, Iowa
Circa: 1952 to 1956
The Lansing Company located in Lansing, Iowa began producing it's plaster like Slik-Toy soldiers during the Korean War in 1951 and ceased all production in 1956. The Company produced 6 of the large plaster Slik-Toy soldiers and 4 of the smaller composite Slikite soldiers. They were air brush painted in shades of green, yellow, brown and flesh tones. The larger Slik-Toy soldiers have their numbers and name cut into the base, but the smaller composite Slikite soldiers are unmarked.
I have been looking for these soldiers for many years as they are hard
to find. They were made in Lansing, Iowa that's where I was born and raised. I now live just across the Mississippi River from Lansing. The Slik Toy Company was at Lansing and I can remember watching the workers in the foundry make the metal sand cast toys and I have collected many of them. I know the man who designed the soldiers he was a nephew of the President of the company. They are hard to find and are expensive to collect.
Thanks, G. R. Sandry
Gene Silverberg was the designer and I think he lives in Illinois Chicago area, I
think, Leo Huschmidt was the founder and uncle of Mr. Silverberg. The main building which was known as the Lansing Button Company is now Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank and 2 other retail stores located on Main Street. The foundry is located in South Lansing and is now part of Brennan Construction Company. The company was for many years a Pearl Button Factory, and after WWII started making Sand Cast Toys and later went into plastic, and finally quit making toys in the 1960's. The same with the buttons they were cut from Clam Shells out of the Mississippi River, and later they quit Claming for Shells and went into plastic buttons. The Button Company built a new building on the west end of Lansing and is now known as the Blumenthal Button Company.
The City of Lansing is an old river town with lots of history of the area of Northeast Iowa. There is a park ( Mt. Hosmer) on the bluff above Lansing that you can see Minnesota, Wisconsin and of course Iowa and the Mississippi River. If you come north for a vacation the upper Mississippi River Valley has the best scenery of the Mid West.

I would like to talk to you about slick toys and my father who has been dead since about 1997. I am very interested in the figurines that he carved and any information that you would know about them. My dad looked up a lot to Leo who was his uncle. Dad carved many things that I have in my house but I have none of the slick toys that he did any information on them would be greatly appreciated and any that I could get a hold of would be wonderful. I have a sister who lives in Dallas Texas and I live in Indianapolis. I look forward to talking to you. You can call me at the number below anytime on the weekends and after 5 PM on weekdays.
Any information or photos on the things my Dad did would be great. I am planing a trip back up to the button factory hopefully before Christmas. I was going to see what they had in their arcives to see if I could find anything of my Dads I could buy from them. Dad died back about 2000. You Would not belive the carvings I have found that he did just for fun. I wish I had 1/4 of his ability to carve wood. I think my Son picked it up from him for sure. In College he carved diansaurs, a wooden pickup truck, several wooden chains, and a few other things. He is an Aeronautical Engineer who graduated from Purdue.
I would also like to come down to Florida. Please send me an address so I can at least come by for and talk for a while.
