Contemporary Dimestore Companies 1976 to Present

This website is dedicated to collecting, photographing, modifying, detailing and weathering military replicas, then placing them in a historically accurate setting, which in my opinion heightens the saisfaction of the hobby.

The J.H. Miller Company, located in Chicago, Illinois began producing it's trademark plaster figures in 1938. The first figures Miller created were nativity scene figures, which were hand painted. By the start World War 2 Miller had relocated his factory to Quincy, Illinois and continued producing his nativity figures until the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, when Miller added his signature 5 inch plaster soldiers to the line, which were airbrushed. Because of the fragility of the figures and a waning interest, Miller ceased production of the plaster soldiers by 1952 but continued to produce a variety of soldiers and figures in several different mediums, including wax, until finally filing bankruptcy in 1959. Most J.H. Miller figures are marked with the company name and date. Due to the fragile nature of the plaster soldiers, it is difficult to find them in Mint condition, but not impossible.

Earth Invaders - In 1958 J. H. Miller Mfg. Co. issued a series of 18 plastic figures depicting strange and unusual space creatures and marketed them as "Earth Invaders."
Older ads state that there were 12 available for 15¢ and six available for 10¢. Original ads themselves showed only 12 different figures. The figures range in size from 2.25" to 4.75" tall.
Each has raised name on base or on the figure itself. Those w/names of planets are Mercury, Mars, Pluto, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Venus and Neptune. The others include two different "Moon Man" figures, "North Star, Big Dipper, Orion, Milky Way, Ceres, Nebula, Betelguese."
Final figure is of a one-eyed, one-horned flying "Purple People Eater" produced to capitalize on the novelty song which was #1 for six weeks in 1958. The creature is depicted holding a music note.
All of the figures are quite interesting but some of the standouts include Nebula which is a two-headed creature, Betelguese who is shown exiting his rocket ship and holding a ray gun, Mercury which is a two-headed robot, Pluto which is a dragon-like creature, Uranus which is a giant w/disproportionate body holding club and Neptune which is a six-legged insect creature w/claw jaw and holds two guns. All have different colored painted accents. Many of these figures are quite scarce on their own, extremely rare to be found.
